What: original 17th-century Tuscan Villa, designed by the Florentine architect Gherardo Silvani. The 1,150 sq m i main house 22 bedrooms. If the sylvan pleasures of the olive groves and Tuscan landscape – not to mention the

Where: Volterra, a historic hilltop town in Western Tuscany, about 40 miles from Pisa.

Who lived there: When it was built, it served as a country residence for the Tuscan aristocracy.

Napoleon stayed there during his travels around Italy. In the 20th century, the film director Luchino Viconti (Death in Venice, The Leopard) discovered the villa while searching the area for locations. His producer, Franco Cristaldi, liked it so much that he bought the listing in the late Sixties and lived there during his marriage to the actress Claudia Cardinale.

The house has a cinema room, befitting a former home of some of the giants of Italian cinema

She was a huge star and in the 1960s was cited as the most popular film star in Italy – more popular than Sophia Loren. In Britain, she’s probably best known for Federico Fellini’s 8½ (1963), and Sergio Leone’s epic spaghetti western Once Upon a Time in the West.
